Job Description : GENERAL SUMMARYCoordinates and performs all tooling engineering activities. Manages tooling budget, purchasing and inventory. Interacts with manufacturing, engineering, quality, facilities, and tool and die work areas to perform all job responsibilities and to initiate continuous improvement and lean activities. As part of the Engineering team, participates in the attainment of department and company goals and demonstrates Spartan’s core operating values through work activities, actions and behaviors.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSCoordinates all activities in build, design and modification of new and existing die cast tooling and trim dies.Manages die drawings and 3-D data in conjunction with Central Engineering and Tooling Vendors, ensuring correct implementation of PDM.Works with Tooling Vendors, and internal tool areas to manage tooling from the initial design through tool build, die cast trials and Customer PPAP/PTR requirements for new and existing programs.Manages the approval of the tooling budget for new and on-going tooling needs, and generates purchase orders in a timely manner. Works closely with Purchasing on maintaining the qualified capacity of tooling and Vendors for Spartan’s current and future tooling needs.Performs purchasing and tooling inventory management functions. Ensures inventories of all die components are adequate to support plant budget and Customer casting demand.Manages the tracking of tool life (CCR) performance, and all customer reporting on tool usage/life activities.Oversees tool shop’s quality and timing to support trials, and development needs.Oversees the change management process for tooling, including the link of ECR’s (Planned Tooling Changes) to die drawings, CAD models, Die Steel, and tool shops. Facilitates methods for quick die change.Develops best practices for die maintenance. Supports continuous improvement activities as it relates to tooling and tooling maintenance.Creates and maintains cash flows for amortized parts and budget for amortized tooling.Analyzes tools at each PM interval and at the end of their life, including premature failure of tools, developing counter measures with the purpose of extending total throughput of the tool. Maintains communication for the PM work content and repairs to the work group (internal or external).Creates and maintains a service parts plan that ensures tools are available to produce service parts for the contracted life.Maintains and improves tooling standards that will lower cost of product.Contributes to and supports the existence of a positive work environment through personal involvement by communicating, interacting and behaving in a manner that promotes productive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and others with whom such relationships are important to the success of company operations.Performs other duties as assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities – No direct supervisory responsibilities.JOB QUALIFICATIONS – Education, Certifications, TrainingRequired: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with 5+ years tooling design, application and management experience.Preferred: NADCA certification in die cast process and tooling; Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancingtraining.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (required, unless stated as preferred)Computer, Technical, mechanical, mathematical and/or scientific skillsProficient skills in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint.Proficient skills in Solid Works for 3-D, 2-D design work and PDM practices.Proficient 2D part print reading skills, including GD&T.Proficient skills in process control programs and measurement methods.Proficient knowledge in manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality and workflow.Proficient knowledge of tool building and machining tools and equipment.Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts, preferred.Proficient knowledge of the die cast process and process control procedures, preferred.Communication Skills – Verbal, Written, Training, Presenting, etc.Proficient oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with all levels of employees and management and with external contacts.Ability to develop and write moderately complex specifications.
