Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience 5 years of industry experience designing automation control systems 2 years of experience with industrial robot programming (e.g., Fanuc, Kuka, ABB, etc.) 2 years of experience with industrial controllers (e.g., Allen Bradly, Beckoff, Siemens, Omron, etc.) Preferred qualifications: Experience with software development (e.g., C++, C#, or Python) Experience with Cloud-based Software Technologies (e.g., PubSub, IoT, Data Warehouses) Experience with standards-based practices in Safety and Electrical Experience with industrial vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence or OpenCV) Experience using electronic fabrication, mechanical fabrication, and test equipment About the job Our computational challenges are so big, complex and unique we can’t just purchase off-the-shelf hardware, we’ve got to make it ourselves. Your team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google’s services. As a Hardware Engineer, you design and build the systems that are the heart of the world’s largest and most powerful computing infrastructure. You develop from the lowest levels of circuit design to large system design and see those systems all the way through to high volume manufacturing. Your work has the potential to shape the machinery that goes into our cutting-edge data centers affecting millions of Google users. The Data-center Automation Systems Engineering team is a rapid iteration group focused on defining and stewarding automation standards for Google. In this role you will be designing, building, and deploying the right amount of automation capability for our partner teams. You will also provide engineering experience and leadership when developing future roadmaps toward optimal use of automation throughout the manufacturing, supply chain, and data center facilities that support Google. As a Mechatronics Control Systems Engineer, you will also help identify new ways of operating data centers using robotics. Our key challenges are around understanding and improving existing workflows and services to become more automation friendly. This means you will be able to work with various teams within and without Data Center Software as well as work with our teams designing and building the actual robotic solutions. As part of our team you will help automate various workflows within a Data Center that are traditionally performed by human operators. Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google’s product portfolio possible. Responsibilities Develop industrial controls systems (e.g., Rockwell PLC, SICK Safety, FANUC) that orchestrate robot performance. Integrate many types of industrial sensors, actuators, and safety systems over industry-standards networks. Troubleshoot deployed automation systems with our Operations Team and identify reliability improvements. Travel occasionally to remote datacenter locations to support deployment of new automation systems. Develop metrics and dashboards that present telemetry collected by robots about the datacenter to help scale our architecture up to 1000+ robots in datacenters around the world.
