Job Summary The primary responsibility of the Manager Mechanical Design is to lead the LRU mechanical and industrial design, development, testing and support qualification of IFEC hardware products to satisfy our customers and meet market demands (competitive in size, weight, cost, performance and reliability), Products interfacing with cabin crew and passenger users designed with aesthetics and industrial design in mind. Responsible to anticipate, plan and maintain optimum mechanical group resource levels, skills and technical competency mix to execute the work scope within contractual delivery dates and budget. Responsible for risk management (anticipation, action and escalation), HW development process enrichment with lessons learned and traceability to process changes; 3rd party suppliers and contractors management. Responsibility includes managing and control development schedule, budget, DTC (design to cost), product performance and compliance to the requirements, monitor progress and conduct projects mechanical milestone reviews and meetings. Responsible for constant evaluation and implementation of advance mechanical SW tools for simulation and analysis, management of advanced mechanical studies dealing with new functions as well as emerging technologies, new processes and materials. Additional responsibilities: Industrial design expert to create and present various technical mechanical and industrial design concepts/solutions to customers, customer program teams, product management and Sr. management. Participates in SAE industry activities crash testing standards. Often manages development and sustaining projectsInternal Customers: Hardware Engineering, Product Management, Industrial OPS, Purchasing and Procurement, Customer programs, Bids.External customers: Seat Partners, Airlines and OEMs.External coordination/management: development partners, contract manufacturers, suppliers and vendors;Functional management: o Manages daily work and performance of the LRU Mechanical Design Engineering Team; o Reinforce strong teamwork and open communication within and external to the group, including Irvine site peers; o Recognize strong individual and team performance, high dedication with timely communication/reward to the employee(s); o Identify weak individual performance and/or behavioral issues and provide the employee with timely feedback, coaching and guidance. o Leads, sets goals, objectives, facilitates progress and asses performances of team members; o Formally document and monitor short-term improvement objectives and actions. o Identifies the required skills, skill gaps, required training. Allocates responsibilities to the various individual contributors and leads these contributors as a team. For the team, he/she schedules, co-ordinates and monitors the implementation of tasks; o Constantly evaluate and implement advance mechanical SW tools for simulation and analysis, management of advanced mechanical studies dealing with new functions as well as emerging technologies, new processes and materials; o Maintains staffing to ensure levels are sufficient to support cross-functional projects as required (Direct, Supplements, and Outsourced work); o Generates and maintains execution plans, schedules and supporting budgets for projects o Develop and improve mechanical engineering performance tracking tools and develops internal operating procedures;Project management: o Provide Project leadership, product level consulting and assume role of chief mechanical contributor on new designs; o Participates in critical project reviews and reports to management outcome of the issue investigations o Ensure that Mechanical engineering aspects of projects are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner and will integrate efforts from various functional groups to accomplish goals; o Generate mechanical estimates and schedules for new projects and proposal activities; o Write the technical specifications, documents and statement of work for 3 rd parties; o Make sure the product meets the customer marketing, industrial and system design requirements; o Provide the technical interface to key subcontractors and customers; o Conduct comprehensive design reviews with engineering team and manufacturing partners to confirm that engineering, cost and manufacturability requirements have been met; o Conceive and plan projects involving exploration of product and/or process problems, definitions and selection of new concepts and approaches to the design or development of new or improved products and processes; o Participates in regular meetings with third Parties / maintains action item lists; o Lead sustaining engineering mechanical investigations, process and documentation updates in collaboration with Thales industrial operations, product engineering and product support engineering teams and manufacturing partners. Industrial Design Expertise: o In cooperation with marketing and product management team promotes Thales brand via modern industrial solutions for Thales in-seat IFEC lines of products; o Provides expertise in a modern industrial design, and works directly with the customer, designed agencies and industrial design partners; o Present industrial design choices to Sr. management via set of slides, demonstrations, 3D SLAs and high fidelity models. Minimum Requirements Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree Mechanical Engineering and/or art required;Minimum ten years’ experience in leading and managing mechanical engineering team;Minimum fifteen (12) years’ experience in mechanical and industrial designs;Hands on Expertise in CAD tools: CREO 4.0 and AutoCAD (2D);Expertise in Product Data Management tools: TeamCenter (or similar) and WindChill;Evidence of excellent communication skills and working with global cross-functional team;Requires expertise in industrial design;Requires expertise in high-volume manufacturing processes, including injection molding of plastics, die-cast metals, metal stamping. Strong knowledge of finishing processes such as plating and painting;Must be familiar with Adobe Illustrator, Photo Shop, MS Project, Microsoft Office and PowerPoint to document and communicate engineering concepts, proposals and design options.Requires expertise in engineering tools for thermal and structural analysis and for comprehensive tolerance analysis of assemblies;Previous experience with avionics design, development, DO-160 qualification and documentation; · Previous experience in planning, implementing, and administering engineering programs and projects; · Requires strengths in the areas of technical leadership, project and program management, team building, leadership communication, staff development, performance management and mentoring.Must be able to present design proposals to project leaders, Thales Sr. Management, development partners, and conduct himself/herself in a confident, articulate manner;Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally up to 25%.Leadership skills / Management skills / Personal skills: o Ability to multitask in an environment requirement a high level of detail and accuracy, work independently and take ownership of all assigned tasks; o Ability to work in a multicultural team with varied degrees of experience; o Must be self-starter and highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment; o Excellent communication skills; o Ability to influencing key stakeholders; o Ability to prioritize tasks while meeting deadlines in a high-pressure environment; o Ability to relentlessly track and follow-up on open issues and action items; o Ability to work collaboratively in a highly dynamic environment; o Ability to drive for results, hold self and others accountable, and continuously improve; o Self-starter with the ability to work through ambiguity and evolving requirements; o Capability to handle team conflicts and bring about resolution Preferred Qualifications Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical fieldTen (10) years’ experience in leading and managing mechanical engineering team, write performance appraisals, determined and administered merit increases;Fifteen (15) years’ experience in mechanical and industrial designs;Minimum 5 years’ experience with aerospace industries;Boeing, Airbus Line Fit qualification experience;Experience with commercial aircraft seat vendors;Experience with AS9102 conformity.Experience with Touch screen technology and high volume manufacturing of laptop, tablets or cell phones Physical DemandsOffice/cubical environmentWeight: up to 15lb Special Position Requirements Schedule: Require weekly work with teams across the globe and with varying work schedules. Physical Environment: Office/cubical, some work can be done remotely;Present for core business hours; · Irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required to complete specific projects; · The position is considered On-Call and a mobile telephone will be provided. Travel: May require up to 25% domestically and internationally. Must keep active passport. This position will require successfully completing a post-offer background check.
