|Job Description :||Job Description Hybrid Work Position: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-4 x per year. Virtual Design, Development and Validation (VDDV) at General Motors is looking for driven individuals to become Computer Aided Engineers (CAE) and lead the future of virtual engineering. As a company we are focused on using virtual tools as the primary driver to enable speed and built in quality. We are looking for our candidates to lead engineering projects by demonstrating initiative, creativity, decision making, and project management throughout the vehicle development process. In addition, to provide technical direction while working with multiple functional groups. The primary job responsibilities are to develop and exercise battery cell electrochemical models to provide electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, and safety related design direction for electric vehicle programs. This involves characterization & optimization of battery cell performance for vehicle range, charging capability, and battery aging effects. The position requires deep technical knowledge in electrochemical mechanisms and the numerical methods used to model them. You should be proficient in the use of modeling tools such as COMSOL, Battery Design Studio, GT-AUTOLION, BIOVIA Material Design Studio, MATLAB/SIMULINK, SABER or other electrochemical modeling tools. Solid understanding of battery systems, cells and multi-scale-multidimensional cell modeling is required, along with experience in multiple battery modeling techniques including equivalent circuit models, reduced order models, and physics based models! Key Responsibilities: Develop, maintain, and calibrate physiochemical models for existing and future battery chemistries using theoretical and empirical methods Create new physiochemical models for existing and future cells by: developing from first principles, blending existing techniques (empirical, theoretical, full and reduced order physics based, finite element, etc.), using existing modeling tools (COMSOL, Battery Design Studio, SABER, etc.) Calibrate and verify models with real cells Design test cases for model calibration and verification Document models, assumptions, and intended usage Participate in cross functional team to extend battery models into controls space for battery state estimation Participate in cross functional team to extend battery models for thermal system development, battery cooling strategies, electrical architecture decisions Participate in development of material test methods and provide electrochemical parameter database Participate in cell safety modeling for abuse conditions (fluid-structure interaction (FSI) gassing, thermal, electrical, etc.) Communicate model functionality, incorporate customer feedback, and work with outside teams to generate useful tools Develop target cell model with representative 3D geometries and mechanical behavior as part of the optimization exercises to contribute to the overall module and pack design Additional Job Description Required Skills and Experience: Strong understanding of modeling processes and tools especially physics based degradation mechanisms and transport phenomena 1+ years of battery electrochemistry modeling experience Solid understanding of thermo-electric technologies and systems design Solid understanding and working knowledge of fundamental physics, equations and numerical methods underpinning all software used Good understanding of instrumentation and test methods used to measure physical properties of materials, systems and environments, etc. e.g. strain, deformation, strength, temperature, pressure, flow, viscosity, voltage, current, resistance, magnetic field strength Preferred Skills and Experience: 3+ years of battery electrochemistry modeling experience Proven experience with development of battery cell designs Experience testing and fabricating battery cells at the coin cell, small scale, and large format cell sizes Familiarity with electrochemical testing techniques such as: Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Linear Sweep Voltammetry, Cyclic Voltammetry Working knowledge battery cell mechanics and how these mechanics change with electrode materials and state-of-aging Education: BS in Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering Required; Chemical Engineering preferred. Advanced degree (MS or greater) in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred.
